Professional Event Report

For my report, I am reviewing a virtual live even I had attended. The event was THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE: ENTER THE DREAMING, an online panel hosted by writer Neil Gaiman and actor Yvette Nicole Brown. The panel discussed the Gaiman’s comic series The Sandman, and his experience writing it and turning it into the famous comic series it is today. I had very much enjoyed this panel, because as my project is about creating a motion comic, learning about story writing and the importance of creative writing was very inspirational. The panel was split into multiple parts, with each part having an additional guest host join in to explain their connection to the series. A major part of the panel was discussing how the comic series was being turned into an audio book form, with professional actors working to become the voices for the characters. listening to the actors talk about how the characters they were voicing impacted them was truly amazing. Neil Gaiman’s writing style is extremely in depth and personal, making each character unique and deep. This panel taught me that having very memorable characters is very key to having an intriguing story, as with out them there would be no life. Another importance from the presentation was how visuals are important for story telling as well. The Sandman’s comic style were very grotesque and rough, as the story was very dark. the imagery used was meant to be haunting, leaving the reader terrified, but not enough that they would be to scared to continue reading. I had very much enjoyed attending this panel, as it showed me how using the right tactics for comic book writing and art style can create a successful and memorable experience.
