Going into the Spring semester, I am overall positive and hopeful about the progress for my thesis. For a reminder, my Senior Thesis is called “Reimagined” and it aims to modernize old print advertisements. During the previous week and this week, I have gotten the main foundations of my project completed that will have the ball rolling for my progress.
The previous week my goal was to get my project organized, primarily with the reference links to the images that I will be using for my project. For this, I made a word document and listed all of the reference links to the old print advertisements I will be using. Then, I made a list of the references links that I will be using for modern images. The list for the modern images though, is not fully completed since I know I will probably need to add more images to the list later on. However, having organized these two lists, allowed me to have a document to refer to for the future. Lastly for this week, I began to Photoshop my modernized version of the “We Can Do It” Advertisement.
This week, my attention was fully focused on creating and finishing my modernized version of the “We Can Do It” advertisement. My aim for this advertisement was not to change the model in it, rather to change how she appeared. I wanted her appearance to match what someone in modern day may look like and obviously would not be found in the 1940s. However, due to life getting in the way this week, I have not currently finished this advertisement. I plan to hopefully have the advertisement finished either later tonight or Wednesday. Below I am sharing the original “We Can Do It” advertisement and compared with my rough draft, modernized version. In my current rough draft, the model has a beanie with white polka dots, arm tattoos, a plaid shirt, an earring, a nose ring, and two rings on her hand.
Currently moving forward, I need to do some minor edits to the modernized version of “We Can Do it”. For example, I need to edit the plaid around the shirt creases so it can look more natural. I also need to edit the beanie, so that it matches the aesthetic of the art. I’m saving the beanie for last though, because the final design has to be absolutely finalized due to its process. For the beanie and other such items, I will continue to use this Youtube video that matches the aesthetic of the advertisement. Overall though, I am excited with how the modernized version is turning out.
The first two weeks has been a great starting point for my project. It has also provided some insight into the planning and scheduling of working on my thesis. Due to some life circumstances, my planned work schedule for the project was impacted. From this situation, I learned an important lesson moving forward. Instead of designating a certain day and time for my project, I may need to just start working on it whenever I have any free time. The designated times I had planned for, were slightly thrown off due to unplanned life circumstances that occurred. Moving forward, I’ll try to work on the project when I have any free time so this hopefully does not happen again. My main goal for this semester, is to try and have one completed, modernized advertisement done every week.
