Tom’s Thesis Update: Thumb Pun

Last December I was working on a rig based on the thumb guys from Spy Kids 2. I showed off a quick work-in-progress pic. It popped off.

So at the start of the semester it was my duty to finish the thumb rig, which I had put on the backburner because I absolutely dread weight painting. Fortunately, that part is done.

Now I had to figure out how I’m going to utilize this thumb guy in a game. And after playing two games that revolve around fun mindless combat, it became clear to me.

Thumb wrestling.

This week I’m working on getting the guy to punch. Animation is not exactly my forte despite taking two animation classes, but at the end of the day, if it looks like a punch and feels like a punch, then it’s a punch.

Looking forward to having a bare-minimum prototype made some point during the semester, because a certain YouTuber wants to show off my thumb guy. At the end of the semester I hope to have a something a little more complete; have it be more than just walking around as a thumb and punching people.

  1. I think that this is a really appealing looking character, and the thumb wrestling pun is definitely a strong hook! Once it’s in a prototype state, definitely post about it, I’d love to check it out.
