Shayna’s Start of Spring Semester Thesis Update

My project was initially supposed to focus around discovering what it takes to be a fitness influencer on Instagram. Over break, I decided I wanted to focus less on social media influencing and more on creating a platform where I teach people how to exercise at home during the pandemic.

I started experimenting with this in January after I got a new phone with a better camera and a tripod. I began by making at-home workout Instagram Reels where I showed different types of exercises in a quick 15 sec. video.

Recently, I changed the name of my project to Home Sweet Home Workouts to better suit my overall thesis goals. In addition, I began sketching out a logo for my project. After getting some critiques on my designs, my next step is to digitize my logo and create a matching color scheme for my project.

Currently, I am working toward creating my first “workout video” post on my account. This will be a post consisting of eight 30-sec. long videos each demonstrating an exercise working the arms and shoulders. To get a better understanding for what I want to accomplish, @lisafiitt on Instagram posts many demonstrational exercise videos for her followers.

The most challenging part of this endeavor has been the filming. Videotaping myself working out has not been an easy feat and has been nerve-wracking and frustrating at times. I am hoping this will become easier with time as I get more accustomed to filming.

So far, I have already filmed and edited my eight, short exercise videos. However, I want to experiment with creating a banner and timer for each individual video. I have never done something like this before but have consulted with some peers that know more on the subject and they have suggested some links to tutorials I can follow. My goal is to have a working prototype done by Wednesday before posting the workout videos either this weekend or by early next week.

  1. Hi Shayna! I think your definitely on the right track for your thesis! It seems like the switch in your thesis better suits your interests and your more interested in it. I think the important thing is just not to get discouraged if something doesn’t go as planned. There definitely will be hiccups and obstacles regarding thesis, so its all a part of the design process.

You mentioned in your post that you were trying to add a timer to your videos. The only suggestions to possibly look into is that I know Youtubers that do reaction videos for tv shows and such, often use a timer for Fair Use purposes. They usually use Adobe Premier or something similar, for their reaction videos. So it may be something to possibly look into? Hopefully there is an easier way to do it just from your phone that you find though!
