Honest Thesis Update

I am going to apologize in advance because I have had a bad week and am in no mood to pull punches right now. I am not happy at all with the amount of work I have done for my thesis nor how thesis as a class was run. I am the kind of person who needs deadlines for this kind of a project if I want any meaningful work to be done.

The lack of actual assignments related to the creation of a physical thesis meant I would spend more time on homework assignments in other classes. Why worry about thesis, it’s not due until the spring anyways (sarcasm). At this point I am over thesis, I’m stressed over all of my classes and don’t want to do anything.

I still plan on making a comic for my thesis but at this point I might just start over and see if that reinvigorate some excitement for this project.

  1. Hey Ciomara, I’m in the same boat as you so I completely understand what you’re saying. I also prefer deadlines because they provide some sort of structure and they basically force you to do the work. How do you feel about your comic now? Are you still interested in trying to develop it or do you think you’re going to come up with another idea? If you decide to stick with your comic, I suggest looking at other comic books for inspiration and really taking a look at how the story flows, the characters, the dialogue. I actually want to share this pdf with you–it talks about how to write a story using pictures:

Also, if you’re having a hard time with the plot, try thinking about things that have happened to you, crazy things you’ve encountered. Maybe you can take one of your personal experiences and change or add some characters?

  2. Hi Ciomara,
I understand how you are feeling. This is a very stressful time, especially with finals around the corner. I am in agreeance with you that deadlines would have been since as I myself need that sort of push to get myself working. Although I wouldn’t be too discouraged on now having as much done with ur thesis now. You got the whole winter break ahead for you to be working on it, so I wouldn’t be too worried or stress about it. If you are not feeling your comic idea, I say it is not too late to change your idea. Find something that excites you and gets you in the working drive. If you are planning to stick with your comic idea, as Justice said I think reading other comics and looking at the structure, story flow, etc. will help you develop your own comic. If you are having trouble coming up with a story, I think writing about things that happen during the quarantine could be a good storyline or maybe a funny personal story you experienced but tweaking a few aspect with it. You got this and I hope you aren’t too stressed with finals!

  3. Honestly same.

The lack of actual deadlines makes me put off this classes work even though I know I shouldn’t because the treacherous thought of “ahaha, ya got until spring my dude don’t worry too much” makes me not work nearly as much as I should to have a meaningful amount of work done.
