Tom Campbell’s Thesis Summary: In five words.

I’m making a Roblox game.

I played Roblox when I was younger, back when it was more like a single game than an entire gaming platform. I made a bunch of friends when I got invited into the prestigious Retexture Artists Official Channel; the admins would look for users who made good retextures of avatar accessories and publish them to the catalog. Eventually some friends and I moved on with our lives and did Roblox stuff less and less, but we still kept in touch whether we were doing Roblox stuff or not.

Fast-forward five years and Roblox is now one of the biggest online gaming platforms and I am a broke, nostalgic college boy. Some of my friends are successful Roblox developers and get invited to conferences and have action figures of their avatar and whatnot. I did some random freelance gigs for Roblox developers and got a couple hundred bucks these past two years or so.

I made my own game this summer. It’s like betting on horse racing but with rats. It’s called Rat Race.

I like what I did. It’s funny, it’s weird. Doesn’t have much substance to it, but making it wasn’t a waste of my time. I wanted to have one big beta testing party with friends and see if that would attract others, but that never really came to fruition.

Anyway, I want to make a game with more game to it. I, of course, want to monetize it, but not have it violently disrupt gameplay or inconvenience players who cannot or would rather not buy something. So far all the ideas I’ve come up with involve “one player vs. everyone else” in some fashion, so I may wind up doing something like that. Think Vs. Saxton Hale in Team Fortress 2 or Ultimate Chimera Hunt from Garry’s Mod.

I also have a number of miscellaneous things. The rat game has a gag that involved exiting the VIP lounge by requiring you to jump into the ball pit. Failure to do so would make the ball pit come after you. This video demonstrates an attempt to make the ball pit a server-wide thing; balances things between server and client to make the tentacle as responsive as possible.

There’s also some custom catalog items I made. Roblox introduced a user-generated catalog item system for select users last year, and I have been making items intermittently in the hopes that whoever runs the program would get my attention. The program is ridiculously exclusive; I had two members of Roblox’s own developer relations team like my work but have no idea who to forward my portfolio to.

Though just last week they opened a public application form after a year of picking users from the shadows; sent my stuff their merry way. Pray I get in.

Below are a couple of my favorite creations.

"Sentry goin' up!"
“Technician Goggles”. Created in August 2019; my first creation after they announced the UGC program. Has 60+ likes on the Roblox developer forum and still regularly gets more; probably because it’s the third post on the UGC creations megathread.
